After Quiet Luxury, Hot Sloth Summer Is Upon Us

A quick vibe check to see if you’re unwittingly following our newly-defined trend: “Hot Sloth Summer.” Have you thrown a coat on over your pyjamas for an emergency hungover trip to Greggs? Have you ordered (also when hungover), two separate Deliveroos in the same day? Have you shut the curtains and stayed in on a sunny afternoon to binge Sex and the City? Have you willfully ignored the laundry as it piles up around you, simply so you can spend more time hate-watching The Idol?

If you have indulged in one or more of the above activities, you have officially entered your Hot Sloth Summer. You’re making instant coffee instead of latte dressing, you’re squeezing ketchup on McCain oven chips instead of working on your tomato girl glow, and your take on the no-make-up make-up trend is… literally no make-up. The Hot Sloth doesn’t plan her outfits according to the wrong shoe theory, she just wears whatever’s closest to the bed.

Perhaps an inevitable reaction to the relentless conversation around “stealth wealth” dressing (the idea of investing in simple luxury pieces in neutral shades, that whisper rather than shout about the wearer’s financial status), the A-list is also adopting this lethargic look. Celebrities are out and about in shades of greige that hint at a black sock left in a white wash, and would make cashmere king Brunello Cucinelli baulk.

It’s less Kendall Jenner adopting the sultry underwear-as-outerwear trend last November in her spring/summer 2023 Bottega Veneta black pants, more Lily-Rose Depp out and about in LA in granny wedges and a pair of cotton boxer shorts that should have remained hidden at the back of her undies drawer. It’s Sophie Turner professing her love for her new Louis Vuitton handbag wearing a ribbed vest top knotted at the back, lace-edged pyjama briefs and with her unbrushed hair in pigtails. It’s pants from the Etam bargain bucket you bought in 2005. It’s a shapeless Brandy Melville vest you’ve owned for a decade. It’s going out without trousers because you’re too apathetic to pick them up off the bedroom floor!

While we’ve all been banging on about quiet luxury (cheers, Roy family), this low-effort look has emerged like a long forgotten sock from the bottom of the washing basket. We’re all addicted to our Uggs (see Bella Hadid in May wearing platform mini Ugg boots and – you guessed it – white pants), the 99p drug store stretchy black headband is a can’t-be-bothered-to-get-a-blow-dry hit (Hadid again, plus Kaia Gerber and Alexia Demie), and the most luxurious shoe on the autumn/winter 2023 catwalk was Bottega’s sock.

Street-styler Lucy Williams is going out in London in pink linen PJ bottoms, and Camille Charrière has been strolling around in wide-leg Adidas trackies that drag on the floor. This is clearly the latest evolution of the Frazzled Englishwoman aesthetic, a micro trend that went viral on TikTok last winter, and honed in on Bridget Jones’s big pants, Kate Winslet’s skinny The Holiday scarves, and the habits of many women in Vogue House come Christmas (weeping at rom-coms, bingeing mince pies and inhaling eggnog).

Should you choose to embrace the inertia of this Hot Sloth Summer, we have just one piece of advice: remember that underwear should be washed above 30 degrees.
